Navigating through Applegreen’s award-winning motorway service area

Sep 27, 2016 | Forecourts

Applegreen is an ambitious and innovative petrol forecourt retailer and motorway services area operator in the Republic of Ireland, with a significant and growing presence in the UK.

It sells high quality petrol at a low price, and its ethos is to go above and beyond to create unique customer experiences in order to differentiate itself. This ethos was the driving force behind the development of the brand’s motorway services area in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, which was recently named International Convenience Retailer of the Year by NACS Insight.

We’d like to think we had a small role in helping Applegreen win this accolade. Half of the upper level mezzanine is dedicated to a completely free, discreet, comfortable, and functional space aimed at commuters on their way to and from work. With complimentary WiFi and charging points, there’s an informal rest area, as well as a number of meeting spaces. We created the design language for all elements, including the layout, furniture specification, fixtures and finishes, ceiling feature, and lighting.

However, given its mezzanine location, Applegreen found that people weren’t using this fantastic space as they weren’t aware of it. How to drive footfall upstairs to the lounge? We named the area Applegreen Lounge, gave it its own identity, and provided ideas on how to promote it throughout the building with signage and posters. We’ve been told this has made a huge difference in the numbers of people that use it.
